Urban Water Quality Technician

Description:

We are looking for an enthusiastic undergraduate researcher to assist in field and laboratory work to further our understanding of urban retention ponds. For flood reduction and nutrient retention, these ponds are now abundant across our landscape. This person will assist in sample collection from constructed ponds across Dane County with a focus on understanding greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide) production and emissions. We intend to use a variety of sampling techniques to understand the drivers and dominate pathways of emissions. There is also a potential opportunity to develop an independent project with the data and continue during the fall semester.

Responsibilities:

  • Safe operation of UW – Madison boats and vehicles
  • Careful data collection and sample processing including water chemistry, sediment samples, dissolved gas, and gas fluxes
  • Assisting with field and lab equipment maintenance
  • Basic data processing
  • General field work support

Qualifications:

  • Must be eager to learn and have a genuine interest in aquatic ecology
  • Maintain positive attitude while conducting work
  • Must be willing to work under sometimes adverse conditions (i.e., hot sun, humid, rain, cold, etc.) for long hours
  • Be able to lift and carry a moderate amount (~30-50 lbs) of gear over short distances
  • Must be able to swim
  • Must be comfortable in canoes and small boats
  • Valid driver’s license which meets UW Risk Management standards is preferred

Details:

  • Number of positions: 2 @ ~30-40 hours per week
  • Start date: mid to late May 2022
  • End date: late August 2022
  • Pay: $14.50 no experience; $14.75 some experience; $15.00 very experienced

Location:

This position will be based out of the Center for Limnology Hasler Lab (680 N Park Street) on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus.
