PhIN Project Intern at Trout Lake Station

Description: We seek a summer student to participate in a guided research project in one or more areas related to lake health, wild rice, or fish parasites and to assist in organizing and planning for the PhIN (Phenological initiatives for INdigenous peoples in Limnology) Project. This research project is out of the University of Wisconsin Center for Limnology (CFL) field station at Trout Lake Research Station (Boulder Junction, WI).

Work will include some aspects of field and/or laboratory work, and the person hired will interact with local communities about the waters of the region. In addition, the person in this position will assist with organizing data collected by past PhIN workshops, assist Lac du Flambeau Tribal Natural Resources in their work on PhIN organizing, and assist in formalizing the future PhIN network with the aim of building strong, long-term relationships between public, private, and Tribal higher education institutions and Tribal Nations in the upper Midwest.

Responsibilities (some training provided):

  • Data collection and processing
  • Must live on site (i.e., Trout Lake Station) or nearby
  • Must attend undergraduate trainings and weekly evening seminars at Trout Lake Station, and willing to assist in project collaborator events (e.g., Lakes Fest)
  • Working mostly on site (i.e., Trout Lake Station) with the possibility of working with collaborators at Lac du Flambeau Tribal Natural Resources in Lac du Flambeau, WI

Qualifications:

The successful applicant:

  • Is an undergraduate student
  • Will have good organizational skills for collecting, storing, and curating data
  • Will have an understanding of Tribal Data Sovereignty (desired but not required)
  • Is a past participant in the PhIN Project or can commit to attending the Winter 2026 (Jan/Feb) and Spring 2026 PhIN workshops
  • Will have a general understanding of animals and plants in the region
  • Able to commit for the full summer

  • Number of positions: 1
  • Start date: mid-May 2025
  • End date: mid-August 2025
  • Pay: $14.50 no experience; $14.75 some experience; $15.00 very experienced

Location:

This position is located at the Center for Limnology’s Trout Lake Station in Boulder Junction, WI in northern Wisconsin. Dormitory style housing (not food) is provided free of charge.
