Oshkosh, WI, April 4 Pella Banquet – UW-Trout Lake Station Limnology Research Center was recently recognized by the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers (WSST) for their outstanding work with Science Education in Wisconsin. WSST recognizes teachers of science annually for their achievements. The Friend of Science Education Award is given annually to recognize outstanding contributions to the support of science teachers by individuals, groups, corporations, or foundations outside the science education community.
The impact of Trout Lake Station on teachers and students is evident in the long-term partnerships with local schools. Through these partnerships students are able to immerse themselves in the research done at the center. Allowing students to see the science they are learning in action makes the science real for them. Lisa McMahon from Arbor Vitae-Woodruff School District shares, “The opportunity for our 3rd and 7th graders is a unique experience to see science in action at a professional level. Students have the opportunity to get their hands dirty, ask lots of questions and have fun learning about our local lake ecosystem and work being done to more fully understand, protect and preserve it.”
Trout Lake Station is also supporting science education through their numerous community partnerships. Their work with Trees for Tomorrow, North Lakeland Discovery Center, local library programs, Boy Scouts of America, and local Nature Centers as well as Open House events and partnerships with summer camp programs extend their reach to all ages and promote the learning and understanding of science across generations. Licia Kuckkahn Johnson with the North Lakeland Discovery Center shared about a successful collaboration Trout Lake Station had with the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Natural Resources Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: “Trout Lake Station mentored student interns at the intersection of art and science, offering community educational opportunities and skill development. The opportunity provided valuable experiences for the interns and the youth they were able to work with through a three day camp.”
WSST once again congratulates and thanks Trout Lake Station for all their contribution to science education in Wisconsin. Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers (WSST) is the largest membership organization in Wisconsin focused on the advancement of science education since 1958. They have a mission of promoting, supporting, and improving science education in the state of Wisconsin by providing leadership, advocacy and programs to enhance the teaching and learning of science. The Awards and Recognition committee is responsible for providing recognition of noteworthy accomplishments by WSST members which support the goals of WSST.
