Description:
We are seeking 1 part-time student (up to 30 hours/week) to assist in the Center for Limnology’s Water Chemistry Lab. The CFL Water Chemistry Lab is responsible for conducting routine analyses on water samples collected from several Wisconsin lakes as part of the NSF funded North Temperate Lakes Long Term Ecological Research program.
Students will be trained and responsible for the following aspects of chemical analysis:
- Acid washing glassware
- Reagent preparation
- Sample preparation and digestion
- Calibrant preparation
- Titration
- Data entry
- Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
- General principles of QA/QC
- Routine operation of the following analytical chemistry instrumentation:
- Shimadzu Total Carbon Analyzer
- Dionex Ion Chromatography System
- Astoria Pacific Segmented Flow Analyzer
- Agilent ICP-OES

Required Qualifications
- Ability to follow a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
- Comfortable working with potentially hazardous chemicals, after hands-on training
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Detail-orientated and self-motivated
- Able to perform repetitive tasks with a high degree of precision and accuracy
Preferred Qualifications
- A chemistry major with an interest in analytical chemistry
- At least one semester of General Chemistry coursework completed
- One semester of Analytical Chemistry coursework completed
- Have two years of academic eligibility left and interest in working during the school year
Details:
- Number of positions: 1 @ up to 30 hours per week
- Possibility of continuing into the academic year as a part-time job
- Hours and work schedule: Part-time, approximately 15-20 hours/week, between May-Sept 2026; Hours and days worked are somewhat flexible, but most work will be during normal business hours (M-F 8-5)
- Start date: spring semester if student’s schedule allows, if not mid to lat May 2026
- End date: late August 2026 (if fall semester schedule does not allow for hours)
- Pay: $14.50 no experience; $14.75 some experience; $15.00 very experienced
Location and Housing:
This position is based full-time at Hasler Lab at the Center for Limnology in Madison, WI. Housing is not provided. Parking at the CFL/on campus is also not included.
