Description:
We are seeking a field and lab undergraduate intern to participate in an ongoing project exploring the impacts of early and late ice off timing on lake communities in northern WI. Working under a field and lab supervisor, this person will conduct field work, lab work and enter data. This researcher will live and work at the Center for Limnology’s (CFL) field station at Trout Lake Station (TLS) in Vilas County, WI.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct field work and collect data with supervisor or peer researcher on two area lakes
- Ready all field equipment
- Help trailer, launch, and drive boat (training will be provided)
- Conduct basic limnological sampling
- Enter data
- Count zooplankton samples using a microscope (training provided)
Qualifications:
The successful applicant:
- is an undergraduate
- will have had some coursework in limnology, botany, ecology or related fields
- will have some experience doing field work (preferably on lakes)
- is comfortable on and in water
- will have an enthusiastic approach to field work, including tolerance of unpleasant weather in the field
- will have excellent attitude when working with others
- will have good organizational skills for assisting with field work and data collection
- will have a familiarity with boating and trailering (desired but not required).
- will have valid driver’s license which meets UW Risk Management standards is required.

- Start date: mid May 2024
- End date: late October 2024
- Pay: $14.50 no experience; $14.75 some experience; $15.00 very experienced
Location:
This position is located at the CFL’s Trout Lake Station in Boulder Junction, WI in northern Wisconsin. Dormitory style housing (not food) is provided free of charge. Enjoy swimming, hiking, fishing, biking and shoreline campfires while gaining valuable research experience!
