Allen
has been working as a fisheries research biologist with
the University of California, Davis - Tahoe Research
Group for the past sixteen years. His work has included
projects throughout the western United States, Antarctica,
Papua New Guinea and Mongolia. Brant's studies have
involved fish population dynamics, aquatic food web
structure, and the spawning behavior of large salmonids
(Salvelinus namaycush) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains
of California, USA. Additionally, he has participated
in studies that evaluated the impacts of hydrocarbon
pollutants on aquatic ecosystems. These studies have
been cited in support of regulation changes regarding
motorized watercraft throughout the United States. A
project evaluating the habitat requirements of Catostomus
santaanae, a federally listed species, is helping resolve
a water use dispute between federal management agencies,
the California State Water Board, a city water department,
and environmental groups. Most recently Brant has been
involved in developing management strategies that would
enhance the success of reintroduced native salmonid
species (Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi) in a sub-alpine
environment. This project is utilizing an ecosystem
approach, taking into account the impacts of introduced
nonnative species and the importance of angling.
