Assignment1:
Paper Summaries: due in lab Sept 9-11
view this example paper summary (real), which received the maximum possible score and this example summary written by your TA. Use these as guides if you are rewriting, but do not plagiarize them.

*These assigned readings will introduce you to several scientific questions that can be addressed through a comparison of several lakes. In this assignment you are asked to identify the null and alternative hypotheses, state the rationale or argument the authors provide for each hypothesis and summarize their findings. [Two paragraphs for each article. 12-point font, double-spaced]
Most paper summaries were written very poorly. They did not cover the points of the papers well and the grammar was often not that expected at a college level. There were also several severe cases of plagiarism.
Plagiarism is a serious offence and it will not be tolerated; please note
that you will receive a 0 and face the consequences described in your student
handbook. If you have any questions about plagiarism, please consult
these resources:

Also if you are worried about your writing or how to determine a null and alternative hypotheses, set up a meeting with one of your TAs or visit the Writing Center on campus. You will be doing much more writing this semester and it would be best to get help early on.

Assignment 4a: Informal Group Project Proposals: due by email Fri
Oct 10
This task is a simple (but mandatory) communication with your TA's regarding the initial development of your group project. Your task: 1) self-organize into groups of 3-5 (group members must be within the lab you are enrolled in) based on a shared limnological topic of interest, group chemistry, etc; 2) communicate on your own time with group members, or during appropriate transition periods during lab, and settle on a topic of interest (note that we cannot provide motorboats, which is a major limitation); 3) have one member report to the TA for your section (Tue=Jennifer, Wed=Scott, Thurs=Natalie) via a short email (limit yourself to 5 sentences) that contains all the information below.
a) The first and last names of members in your group.
b) The project idea stated in the form of a question.
c) Your potential approach (What variables do you want to measure? Where/when do you think you will sample?)
Note that you have a lot of creative license here (so long as the topic is
aquatic in nature), and will be able to measure any variable covered in any of
the labs (future ones included), as well as any variable you can think of
yourself so long as you have the ability to measure it through your own
available resources. The TA's will then give you some preliminary feedback
prior to the due date of your formal proposal. If you need help finding a
group, please email your TA.
