Using the EndNote government document library
The Search References command is under References on the menu bar (the shortcut is Ctrl + F). It is a standard search engine that can be used with one or more search terms along with the Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT to refine searches.
Search will truncate all terms by default. Typing in "fish" will display every item containing: fish, fishery, fisheries, fishing, etc.
Use Search to find works in our collections by a certain author or by the the title or partial title of the work.
Locating Items in the collection
Government documents are shelved according to their individual rubric --a descriptive categorical heading. The rubric for each item is located in the keywords field in the item's EndNote record. Rubric is assigned according to the state or country that the publishing agency is in or belongs to, or the society or organization's name..
For example, a technical bulletin published by the Department of Natural Resources would be shelved under the rubric Wisconsin. Department of Natural Resources. Technical Bulletin.
A technical report by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's information would be shelved under the rubric Massachusetts. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Abstracts for ASLO meetings would be shelved under the rubric American Society of Limnology and Oceanography.
Hints for searching the EndNote government document library most effectively
-
Search under "Any Field" as opposed to a specific field (e.g. choosing Author or Title from the drop-down menu). If you get too many references using your search term try limiting the search by adding more keywords using AND in the find window.
-
Try variations on the name: program and abstracts, abstracts, annual meeting, etc. For acronyms such as ASLO, try searching under both the acronym and the full name (American Society of Limnology and Oceanography)
-
Remember that in government documents the rubric is the call number or location device.
-
If you don't find an author, try searching for the series (e.g. annual reports) the government document belongs to.
