The Limnology and Marine Sciences Program (LMS) is an interdisciplinary graduate training program offering M.S. and Ph.D. degrees to students interested in the science of freshwater and marine ecosystems. The LMS program at UW-Madison is unique among U.S. universities in our emphasis on the science of freshwater and marine systems from an interdisciplinary approach that includes physical, chemical, biological, and social science perspectives. In the most recent National Research Council assessment, the Limnology & Marine Science doctoral program ranked in the top 15% of its peer programs nationally (UW News article on NRC assessment ).

students01.jpgOur primary focus is to promote excellence in research through faculty mentorship. True to our interdisciplinary nature, the LMS graduate faculty is composed of active researchers from departments throughout our campus including Zoology, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Botany, Entomology, Agronomy, Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, Geology and Geophysics, and Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. The scientific and academic diversity of our faculty provides students with a rich variety of interdisciplinary training and research opportunities.

The Center for Limnology (CFL) has many connections to the LMS program. CFL faculty are all involved in LMS, in every aspect of interdisciplinary research. CFL provides the office space for LMS staff, as well as access to lakes of the state of Wisconsin.
